- Pre-tax price = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100).
- US sales tax combines state, county and city rates.
- Five US states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon.
Worked example: $100 item at 8.25%
- 1Tax: 100 × 0.0825 = $8.25.
- 2Total: 100 + 8.25 = $108.25.

How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the price by the rate as a decimal. $50 at 7% is 50 × 0.07 = $3.50 tax.
How do I remove sales tax from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. $107 at 7% was $100 before tax.
Is sales tax the same as VAT?
No. Sales tax is added once at the final sale and shown separately; VAT is charged at every stage and usually included in shelf prices.
