Final price after a percent off
How it works
- Sale price = original × (1 − discount ÷ 100).
- You save original × discount ÷ 100.
- Stacked discounts multiply: 20% then 10% off is 28% off, not 30%.
- Working backwards: discount % = (original − sale) ÷ original × 100.
Worked example: 30% off $80
- 1Saving: 80 × 0.30 = 24.
- 2Sale price: 80 − 24 = 56.
- 3Check: 80 × 0.70 = 56, the same answer in one step.
You pay $56 and save $24

Frequently asked questions
What is 30% off $80?
You save $24, so the final price is $56.
How do two discounts stack?
They apply one after the other, so 20% off then an extra 10% off leaves you paying 0.8 × 0.9 = 72% of the original — a 28% total discount, not 30%.
How do I work out the discount percentage from two prices?
Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100. From $80 to $56 is 24 ÷ 80 × 100 = 30% off.
Is the discount applied before or after tax?
Shops normally discount the pre-tax price and then apply tax or VAT to the reduced amount, so you pay tax only on what you actually spend.
