What your salary is really worth per hour
How it works
- Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (weekly hours × working weeks per year).
- A standard full-time year is 52 weeks × 40 hours = 2,080 paid hours.
- Unpaid overtime lowers your true hourly rate — enter the hours you really work.
- Paid holidays do not change the rate: you are paid for those weeks whether you work them or not.
- Compare like with like: convert both offers to the same basis (gross hourly) before deciding.
Worked example: $60,000 a year at 38 hours a week
- 1Working weeks per year: 52 (holidays are paid, so they count).
- 2Paid hours per year: 38 × 52 = 1,976.
- 3Hourly rate: 60,000 ÷ 1,976 = 30.36.
$60,000 a year ≈ $30.36 per hour
Common salaries converted to hourly (40 h/week, 52 weeks)
| Annual salary | Monthly | Hourly rate |
|---|---|---|
| $30,000 | $2,500 | $14.42 |
| $40,000 | $3,333 | $19.23 |
| $52,000 | $4,333 | $25.00 |
| $60,000 | $5,000 | $28.85 |
| $75,000 | $6,250 | $36.06 |
| $100,000 | $8,333 | $48.08 |
Based on 2,080 paid hours per year. Fewer weekly hours means a higher hourly rate for the same salary.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a yearly salary to an hourly wage?
Divide the annual salary by the number of hours you work in a year. For a 40-hour week with no unpaid weeks off, that is 2,080 hours, so a $52,000 salary equals $25.00 per hour.
Should I use gross or net salary?
Use gross salary for a rate you can compare against advertised hourly jobs. Use net (take-home) pay if you want to know what an hour is actually worth in your pocket.
How do I convert a monthly salary to hourly?
Multiply the monthly salary by 12 to get the annual figure, then divide by your yearly working hours. A €4,000 monthly salary is €48,000 a year, which at 40 hours a week is about €23.08 per hour.
Does unpaid overtime change my hourly rate?
Yes. If you are paid for 40 hours but regularly work 45, your true hourly rate drops by about 11%. Enter the hours you actually work to see the real figure.
What about part-time salaries?
The formula is the same. A $30,000 part-time salary at 20 hours a week is 30,000 ÷ (20 × 52) = $28.85 per hour — part-time pay often looks lower yearly but can be similar per hour.
