How it works
- Tip = bill × percentage ÷ 100; total = bill + tip.
- 15–20% is customary in the United States for table service.
- Quick mental check: 10% is the bill with the decimal point moved one place left; halve that for 5%.
- In most of Europe a service charge is often included — rounding up is normal.
Worked example: 18% on a $85 bill split 4 ways
- 1Tip: 85 × 0.18 = 15.30.
- 2Total: 85 + 15.30 = 100.30.
- 3Per person: 100.30 ÷ 4 = 25.08.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
In the US, 15% is standard, 18–20% for good service. In much of Europe, 5–10% or rounding up is normal, and in Japan tipping is not expected.
Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Either is accepted. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is technically correct; many people simply use the final total for speed.
How much is a 20% tip on $50?
$10, making the total $50. Twenty percent is simply a tenth of the bill doubled.
How do I split a bill unevenly?
Work out the tip on the full bill first, then have each person pay their own items plus the same percentage on top of what they ordered.
Should I tip on delivery or takeaway?
Delivery drivers are usually tipped 10–15% or a few dollars minimum. For counter takeaway a tip is optional, and many people round up instead.
