How it works
- Fuel used = distance ÷ 100 × litres per 100 km.
- Motorway speeds above 110 km/h noticeably raise consumption.
- Winter driving, roof boxes and underinflated tyres can add 10–20% to real consumption.
- Splitting a trip four ways usually makes driving cheaper per person than the train.
Worked example: 450 km at 6.5 L/100km, fuel €1.85/litre
- 1Fuel needed: 450 ÷ 100 × 6.5 = 29.25 litres.
- 2Cost: 29.25 × 1.85 = 54.11.

How do I find my car's consumption?
Check the trip computer's long-term average, or divide litres filled by kilometres driven since the last full tank and multiply by 100.
How do I calculate fuel cost per kilometre?
Multiply consumption per 100 km by the fuel price and divide by 100. At 6.5 L/100km and €1.85 per litre that is about €0.12 per kilometre in fuel alone.
Does the calculation include wear and depreciation?
No — this is fuel only. Full car running costs including maintenance, insurance and depreciation are typically two to three times the fuel figure.
How much does an electric car cost per kilometre?
Use the electricity calculator: an EV using 18 kWh per 100 km at €0.30 per kWh costs about €0.05 per kilometre — roughly half a petrol car's fuel cost.
