Running Pace
Pace per km, speed and race projections
How it works
- Pace = time ÷ distance, shown as minutes and seconds per kilometre.
- 5:00/km is 20 km/h ÷ 4 — a 50-minute 10 km.
- Race projections assume even pacing; most runners fade slightly on longer distances.
- Even or negative splits (second half faster) produce the best race results.
Worked example: 10 km in 48:30
- 1Total seconds: 48 × 60 + 30 = 2,910.
- 2Per kilometre: 2,910 ÷ 10 = 291 s = 4:51/km.
- 3Speed: 10 km ÷ 0.8083 h ≈ 12.4 km/h; per mile: 4:51 × 1.609 ≈ 7:48/mile.
4:51/km · 7:48/mile · 12.4 km/h
Pace needed for popular race goals
| Goal | Distance | Required pace |
|---|---|---|
| 10 km under 40 min | 10 km | 4:00/km |
| 10 km under 50 min | 10 km | 5:00/km |
| Half marathon under 1:45 | 21.1 km | 4:58/km |
| Half marathon under 2:00 | 21.1 km | 5:41/km |
| Marathon under 3:30 | 42.2 km | 4:58/km |
| Marathon under 4:00 | 42.2 km | 5:41/km |
Frequently asked questions
What pace do I need for a sub-2-hour half marathon?
About 5:41 per kilometre, or 9:09 per mile, held for the full 21.1 km.
How do I convert pace per km to pace per mile?
Multiply by 1.609. A 5:00/km pace is about 8:03 per mile.
What is a good running pace for a beginner?
Anything between 6:00 and 7:30 per kilometre is typical for new runners. The right training pace is one where you can still hold a conversation.
How accurate is the race projection?
It assumes you keep the same pace over the new distance, which is optimistic for longer races. Real marathon projections from a 10 km time usually add 5–10% to the pace.
